Hip Arthroscopy Traction

There is no consensus on the optimal amount and duration of traction during hip arthroscopy. The amount of traction used varies depending on the surgeon's preference and the specific procedure(s) being performed. The duration of traction is typically between 30 and 60 minutes.

A 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 studies found that there was no significant difference in clinical outcomes between patients who underwent hip arthroscopy with different amounts of traction (30-60 pounds). However, the authors noted that there was a trend towards improved outcomes with higher amounts of traction.

The same study also found that there was no significant difference in clinical outcomes between patients who underwent hip arthroscopy with different durations of traction. However, the authors noted that there was a trend towards improved outcomes with longer durations of traction.

Based on the available evidence, it is reasonable to use a range of traction amounts and durations during hip arthroscopy. The strength of evidence is low. The specific amount and duration of traction used should be individualized to the patient and the specific procedure being performed. In general, lower amounts of traction force and time are preferred to reduce possible complications.
