Femoroplasty

Femoroplasty

The cam lesion is one of the common pathologic components of femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). Removal of the cam lesion is a surgical technique in which excess bone is shaved off the femoral head-neck junction to restore normal hip contour and motion. Various studies have evaluated whether cam removal significantly effects outcomes for hip arthroscopic treatment of FAIS. In a systematic review, Smith and Jones (2017) found that arthroscopic femoroplasty is an effective treatment for femoroacetabular impingement, with a significant improvement in pain and function at short-term follow-up. The study also found that arthroscopic femoroplasty is a safe procedure, with a low risk of complications. Lall and Villar (2018) found similar results, along with other more recent systematic reviews. Foulouris and Giannoudis (2021) recently evaluated the economics of femoroplasty and found that it was cost-effective for treatment of FAIS.

Altogether, the available literature evidence supports the use of arthroscopic femoroplasty for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement. Arthroscopic femoroplasty is a cost-effective treatment that can significantly improve pain, function, and quality of life. Arthroscopic femoroplasty is also a safe procedure with a low risk of complications.
